FAO at the 53rd Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission

25/02/2022

The 53rd UN Statistical Commission will take place virtually from 28 February-4 March 2022. The annual Commission provides an opportunity for FAO to inform the wider statistical community of the progress it has made over the past year and what lies ahead.

FAO’s statistical work and role to monitor the Sustainable Development Goals will be high on the agenda at the UN Statistical Commission (UNSC) at UN headquarters in New York, from 28 February to 4 March 2022. The highest decision-making body for international statistical standards, which will meet for its 53rd session, will bring together Chief Statisticians from Member States and international organizations from around the world.

In the margins of the week-long conference, FAO actively contributed to the discussions, including by organizing three side events:

The annual Commission provides an opportunity for FAO to inform the wider statistical community of the progress it has made over the past year and what lies ahead. In particular, FAO’s report on recent developments in Agricultural and Rural Statistics will be discussed by the Statistical Commission on Wednesday 2 March. Members are expected to take note and provide feedback on the following:

  • FAO’s proposed integrated internal coordination for data and statistics (Part 1);
  • the implementation of major capacity development programmes in the areas of food security, agriculture and rural statistics and SDG indicators under FAO custodianship (Part 2);
  • the first two-years’ work of the UN Committee of Experts on food security, agricultural and rural statistics (UN-CEAG) (Part 3); and
  • the recommendations of the 2021 FAO Regional Commissions for Agricultural Statistics outlined (Part 4).
