Successful First National Knowledge Share Fair on Agriculture

09/02/2015

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation commits to organizing a share fair annually.

The four days National Knowledge share Fair organised by The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) closed Thursday 5th, February 2015. The success of fair brought to the agreement that it will be organised annually under the leadership of the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation.

It was the first time a knowledge share fare was conducted in Sudan. More than 450 participants from various entities (Government, UN agencies, NGOs, private sector, academia and civil society including farmers associations) came to showcase and learn from agriculture related innovative and creative ideas to replicate or adopt. Depending on their respective expertise and interest, they could participate to 30 sessions on thematic areas such as food security, production and productivity, microfinance, infrastructure, water harvesting, and climate change.

Key recommendations emanated from the fair: Under the directives of H.E. Vice President, Hassabo Mohamed Abdurahman an award mechanism should be established to encourage all stakeholders to engage in and share agricultural innovative knowledge and good practices. Advocacy to promote agricultural knowledge sharing is needed through increased media partnership and support. A unique information database at state level should be used for information management and knowledge exchange, interactive networking and improved coordination between the Government and different stakeholders. The national agricultural Knowledge and Information Management and Sharing Platform developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) under the request of the MoAI should be adopted in that effect. Guidelines will be prepared and a high committee on knowledge share fairs is proposed to be established for the conduction of future events. A committee will be formed to follow-up on decisions taken at the fair.

The National Knowledge Share Fair was supported by FAO, the World Food Programme (WFP), the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Practical Action and other stakeholders.
