National workshop on Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) data analysis in Maseru (Lesotho)

19/06/2023 - 21/06/2023

FAO is conducting a technical training workshop for enhancing the analytical capacity of key national institutions in Lesotho for analysing the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) data analysis in Maseru, Lesotho from June 19 to 21, 2023.

As the custodian agency for SDG indicator 2.1.2, FAO supports the efforts of the countries in monitoring target 2.1 “by 2030 end hunger and ensure access by all people, in particular the poor and people in vulnerable situations including infants, to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round”. The workshop aims to equip the participants with skills for analysing FIES data collected through the Vulnerability Assessment Survey of 2018 and the 2020 Lesotho Covid-19 Socio Economic Impact on Households Survey. Both these surveys utilized the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) to measure household food access experiences. The training is particularly timely given the recent adoption of FIES-based indicators in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) acute food insecurity analyses in Lesotho.

Expected Outcomes:

Improved capacity among key national stakeholders from Lesotho Bureau of Statistics, Ministry of Agriculture and other institutions to analyze food security data using FIES methodology.

Hands-on experience for participants in applying FIES methodology for generation of preliminary food insecurity prevalence rates in Lesotho using data from the 2018 Vulnerability Assessment Survey and 2020 COVID-19 socioeconomic impact survey.

Sustained partnership between FAO and key national stakeholders in Lesotho for ongoing capacity strengthening on SDG 2.1 monitoring and using the findings to shape food security policies and programs in Lesotho.

Participants:

The training is being attended by 15 technical experts from the Bureau of Statistics, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Vulnerability Assessments Team.
