National workshop on SDG indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 in Blantyre (Malawi)

18/09/2023 - 22/09/2023

FAO is hosting a technical training workshop for calculating SDG indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2, using the Malawi Household Budget Survey 2018, 2020 data, in Blantyre, Malawi from September 18 to 22, 2023.

In line with the second Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 2) - "end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture", the FAO has championed two key indicators for monitoring global progress: the prevalence of undernourishment (PoU; SDG indicator 2.1.1) and the prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity as measured by the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES; SDG Indicator 2.1.2). To optimize the utility of these indicators, the FAO extends support to countries in bolstering their statistical capacities for monitoring SDGs, and for the computation, dissemination, and utilization of these indicators. This empowers countries with essential analytical and decision-making tools, fuelling evidence-based actions at national, regional, and global levels.

Expected Outcomes:

  • Participants gain a deep understanding of SDG target 2.1 and FAO's role in aiding countries to achieve this target.
  • The workshop enables participants' understanding of FIES and PoU methodologies, their theoretical foundations, data interpretation and analysis techniques.
  • They develop proficiency in using softwares like SPSS and Stata for estimating FIES and PoU indicators.

Participants:

The training is being attended by 20 technical experts from the multi-disciplinary Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee, which includes the Ministry of Agriculture, the National Statistics Office, National Food Council, the Office of the Prime Minister, the Ministry of Economy and Planning and many more.
