National workshop on SDG indicators 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 in Islamabad (Pakistan)

20/11/2023 - 24/11/2023

This workshop is being organised in response to the request by Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), to provide technical assistance on the food security indicators i.e. Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU), Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity based on Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES) and Integrated food security Phase Classification (IPC) to enhance the capacity of national staff. The workshop aims to share the theoretical and technical understanding of food security indicators with national stakeholders and by using the microdata of Household Income Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2018-19, to estimate the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU) and Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity using FIES at national and sub-national levels.

Expected Outcomes:

  • The methodologies for compiling both the food security indicators are thoroughly understood by the participants.
  • Within the context of PoU estimation, the procedures of estimating the Dietary Energy Consumption (DEC) and the Minimum Dietary Energy Requirement (MDER) are understood, by focusing on reasons and modalities for data treatment needed to control excess variation of DEC due
  • Understanding of FIES strengthened by understanding its theoretical foundation. A hands-on training on using the FIES data collected in HIES 2018-19 using R and Stata scripts further deepens the understanding. As an alternative, FIES estimation is also understood using FAO’s FIES Shiny App tool.

Participants:

The workshop was attended by 28 participants from Ministry of National Food Security and Research (MNFSR), Ministry of Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, Provincial Bureaus of Statistics, Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC), National Agriculture Research Center (NARC), Pakistan of Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), and members of FAO country office.
