Chiba (Japan), 21/10/2019 - 24/10/2019

The overall goal of the regional workshop was to provide government officials responsible for SDG monitoring with capacity development in methodology, data collection, and calculation of selected SDG indicators related to sustainable and productive agriculture. SDG indicators 2.3.1, 2.3.2, 2.4.1, 5.a.1, and 12.3.1 are among them.

The four-day workshop specifically aimed to:

- Update countries on SDG methodologies and tools 2.3.1; 2.3.2; 2.4.1; 5.a.1 and 12.3.1;

- Understand and evaluate capacity and data gaps, as well as discuss countries' short and long-term plans to collect data on the indicators;

- Discuss the importance of farm survey-based SDG indicators and provide an overview of the AGRISurvey and the 50 x 2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap;

- Through presentations and hands-on exercises, strengthen the technical staff of countries and agencies in the compilation and interpretation of selected indicators.

Working groups provided participants with the opportunity to share best practices and experiences. They also had the opportunity to discuss their respective roles and responsibilities, as well as strategies for overcoming potential challenges related to the indicator reporting process.

Outcomes:

The workshop assisted countries and stakeholders in assessing the measurement challenges of the aforementioned indicators, designing effective data collection mechanisms, and providing the foundation for designing improved, data-driven policies. More specifically, the following were the expected outcomes:

- An assessment of the current situation in terms of countries' technical capacity to monitor selected SDG indicators. These assessments will be useful in national and regional planning and resource mobilization.

- In-depth training on the methodology and tools for selected SDG indicators, in order to support their adoption at the country level.

- Create a country-specific road map, along with a concrete action plan and timetable for producing, reporting, and using SDG indicators, as well as, if necessary, an official request for technical assistance.
