Regional Workshop on SDG Indicator 12.3.1a

Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), 15/09/2019 - 19/09/2019

A regional workshop for LAC member countries was organized by the FAO-OEA/CIE-IICA working group on agricultural and livestock statistics for Latin America and the Caribbean. The workshop was held concurrently with the working group's 29th session. The training course aimed to improve the capacity of National Statistics Offices, Ministries of Agriculture, and/or other entities involved in Food Loss and Waste work by training statistical staff. The workshop was conducted in both English and Spanish.

The workshop's goal was to present and explain to the selected countries the FAO's proposed methodology for indicator 12.3.1. It primarily examined the Food Loss Index's rationale and interpretation, as well as how it is constructed and which tools are required for its compilation, monitoring, and reporting processes.

Participants included representatives from the region's various NSOs tasked with assisting their governments in measuring losses and waste under the SDG indicator. Participants had expertise in postharvest losses, value chains, and/or agriculture surveys, or they were focal points for SDG 12.3, and they also had an actual or potential training role in their respective regions. Antigua, Argentina, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, St Lucia, St Vincent, and Suriname were among the 20 countries that took part.
