FAO and the 2030 Agenda Follow-Up and Review

2030 Agenda follow-up and review

As the lead UN agency responsible for food security and the custodian of 21 SDG indicators, as well as a contributor to further five, FAO plays an active role in the national, regional, and global follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda.

At the global level, FAO participates in the high-level political forum on sustainable development (HLPF), which serves as the main platform for reviewing SDG progress. At the regional level, FAO contributes to the Regional Fora for Sustainable Development (RF4SD) which convene key stakeholders to discuss both achievements and challenges. At the national level, FAO provides support for Voluntary National Reviews (VNRs), which allow countries to review their SDG progress, share lessons learned and identify opportunities for improvement.

The Office of Sustainable Development Goals guides FAO’s participation in these processes and has developed a toolkit of resources for countries and regions in their preparation, engagement and follow-up actions at all levels.

 

2024 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

The 2024 HLPF, under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council, will be held from 8-12 July, in New York, convening under the theme “Reinforcing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises: The effective delivery of sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions”.

It will conduct an in-dept review of SDG 1 (no poverty), SDG 2 (zero hunger), SDG 13 (climate action), SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions), and SDG 17 (partnerships for the goals). The 2024 HLPF will be the first HLPF after the 2023 SDG Summit  and it will support the implementation of the Political Declaration and other outcomes of the SDG Summit for advancing the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. FAO is actively engaged in the preparatory process in advance of the HLPF, given its role as custodian agency of ten indicators under SDG 2 and contributing agency to two under SDG 1, contributing its data and expertise in understanding progress made and actions needed for the future.

Regional Fora for Sustainable Development

The HLPF is informed by five Regional Fora for Sustainable Development (RFSD), which are convened by each of the five UN Regional Commissions to share experiences and discuss progress and concrete policy solutions on the SDGs under review.

Voluntary National Reviews

Voluntary National Reviews, carried out by UN Members are further key inputs in the annual HLPF and of the follow-up and review architecture of the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs overall.  FAO supports countries to prepare their VNR reports, providing dedicated engagement with national and regional partners and key stakeholders. The FAO Office of Sustainable Development Goals (OSG) has developed a tailored toolkit of supports for this propose. The toolkit includes a guidance note with timelines and roadmaps, webinar series and capacity building activities, as well as context-based consultations and support for the post-review action plans.

 

Expert Group Meeting on SDG 2

In preparation for the in-dept review of SDG 2, in collaboration with UN DESA’s Division for Sustainable Development Goals, FAO will organize an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) in March 2024 to take stock of where we are in terms of progress towards the SDG targets, to consider interlinkages with other SDGs and opportunities to leverage synergies and minimize trade-offs; to share knowledge about success stories, good practices and challenges; to identify particular areas of concern; and to suggest ways forward in terms of policies, partnerships and coordinated actions at all levels.

2024 Summit of the Future

To further support and accelerate the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, a high-level Summit of the Future will be held on the 22-23 September 2024. Set to be convened under the theme “Multilateral Solutions for a Better Tomorrow”, the Summit will bring together UN Member States, UN agencies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society organizations (CSOs), academic institutions, the private sector, and youth, with the aim of promoting effective UN reform for a stronger, more accountable and inclusive multilateral system.

The summit will be informed by 11 policy briefs which will focus on: the New Agenda for Peace; metrics that go beyond GDP; global financial architecture reform; needs of future generations; international response to complex global shocks; global digital cooperation; information integrity; peaceful, secure, and sustainable use of outer space; reimagining and accelerating progress on education; participation by young people in decision-making processes; and ‘UN 2.0’.

The Summit will adopt ‘A Pact for the Future’ – a concise, action-oriented outcome document, to be agreed in advance by consensus through intergovernmental negotiations.
