FAO at the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2024

The Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2024, is an annual intergovernmental forum aims to assess progress and exchange knowledge, best practices, and policy solutions to support the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in line with regional priorities.

Taking place 15- 18 April and organized by the UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Forum provides the space for an discussion on the Goals to be reviewed by the HLPF in 2024: SDG 1 (no poverty); SDG 2 (zero hunger); SDG 13 (climate action); SDG 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions); and SDG 17 (partnership for the Goals). The Forum will also support presentation of voluntary national reviews (VNRs) at the 2024 HLPF.

Forum of Children, Adolescents and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean 

Organized by the Group of Children, Adolescents and Youth, together with ECLAC, FAO and other UN agencies, this Forum presented the different realities and experiences of youth, as well as their specific proposals and recommendations for the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). FAO Assistant Director General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkin, participated in the Forum.

Side event: Food Systems Transformation as Accelerator for the SDGs Implementation in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) Region

This session emerged against the backdrop of the UN Food Systems Summit +2 Stocktaking Moment (UNFSS+2) in 2023, highlighting the potential of sustainable, inclusive, nutritious, and resilient food systems as key drivers for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It explored the challenges and opportunities for transforming food systems, building on key outcomes of the UNFSS+2, the SDGs Summit, and COP28, to identify essential steps and align with climate action efforts at national and regional levels. It featured insightful keynotes and a panel discussion with a wide array of stakeholders from the LAC region, including government officials, National Convenors, CSOs, and the private sector. It included a robust dialogue on the progress of food systems transformation, spotlighting the tools, resources, and collaborative strategies necessary to support the national pathways towards achieving the SDGs. Focusing on SDGs 1 (No Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), and 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), this event explored transformative solutions addressing the critical food-climate nexus.

Latin America and the Caribbean Food Systems Transformation Progress Review

The UN Food Systems Coordination Hub together with the United Nations Interagency Food Systems Task Force for Latin America and the Caribbean (in direct coordination with the Regional Offices of agencies composing the Task Force, the Latin America and the Caribbean Economic Commission, and other bodies of the United Nations), convened Food Systems National Convenors and other experts from across the region to assess the progress made in transforming food systems, facilitate regional knowledge sharing, and identify emerging patterns and solutions. A summary report from the meeting will be produced, that will include the shared outcomes among participating countries and stakeholders to strengthen their collaborative efforts in the transformation of food systems.

Panel 2: Goal 2 – Zero hunger 

FAO Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkin, moderated Panel 2 "Goal- Zero Hunger" at the Forum of the Countries of Latin America and the Caribbean on Sustainable Development 2024.

SDG 2 is one of the Goals under review in 2024. This panel discussion facilitated knowledge and experience exchange among Members on current and innovative policies and practices, through a multi-stakeholder, participatory and inclusive dialogue.
