The report describes the generic rice value chain in Dien Bien province, Viet Nam and analyses in detail the value chains of IR64 rice (paddy rice) and Upland Sticky Rice. These were two types of rice which were perceived as those with relatively higher value and market potentials. However, the report has found that neither of these rice types is optimal to support poor smallholders in the province and the popularity of the IR64 rice has actually been decreasing.
