Making Value Chains Work Better for the Poor: A Toolbook for Practitioners of Value Chain Analysis

2008

The book provides a comprehensive theoretical background of value chain analysis (Part 1) and a set of tools for conducting value chain analysis and development with a focus on poverty reduction (Parts 2-4). Various case examples are provided in order to illustrate the implementation of these tools. The book can be used by both field-based practitioners and policy-makers. In particular Tool 6 of this publication provides a comprehensive and practical approach to analyzing costs and margins within the value chain and thus provides support to analyzing profitability in the chain.  For job creation and enhanced livelihoods Tool 7 covers income distribution and Tool 8 provides for analyzing employment distribution in the value chain. Still Tool 7 covers aspects related to equitable distribution. Tool 2 provides a comprehensive and practical approach to value chain mapping, while Tool 4 looks at linkages, relationships and trust.
