The paper is a part of a project which aims at using value chain analysis to evaluate the effectiveness of Fair Trade in improving smallholder farmers' economic and social situation and compares this with other ethical schemes. Apart from coffee, the project included the value chain analyses of rice, handicrafts, cotton and textiles.
