This paper looks at contract farming as a private sectors response to the increasing demand for quality and safety in livestock products. Through three case studies of swine value chain in Viet Nam, the Philippines, and Thailand, the paper considers whether this vertical coordination initiative can effectively help smallholder farmers stay competitive.
