Pitting is one of the site preparation methods used on the long-term experiment at the Harkerville site in South Africa. Since pitting involved minimal soil manipulation and it had no fertilizer application, it is considered to be the control treatment in the Harkerville experiment. A description of the soil profile on this treatment is also provided.
