Case Details
Providence’s urban forest: structure, effects and values
Understanding an urban forest's structure, function and value promotes management
decisions that improve human health and environmental quality.
The urban forest is compromised of more than just street trees; environmental
benefits are also derived from trees in parks, yards, institutional land, natural areas,
and other locations. An assessment of the vegetation structure, function, and value
of the Providence urban forest was conducted during 2013. Data collected from
250 field plots located throughout Providence were analyzed using the i-Tree Eco
model developed by the U.S. Forest Service, Northern Research Station.
The report contains detailed information on conducting a tree inventory, including software, plot selection, survey instruments and personnel. The report also presents the values of urban forests in Providence in term of air pollution removal, carbon storage and sequestration, oxygen production, energy saving and stormwater runoff mitigation.
