Transboundary Plant Pests and Diseases

FAO experts delivered a seminar on locust control and transboundary plant pests to postgraduate students at CIHEAM-IAMB

14/11/2023

Two technical experts from the Locusts and Transboundary Plant Pests and Diseases team (NSPMD) at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) delivered a seminar for postgraduate students in the Integrated Pest Management of Fruit and Vegetable Crops (IPM) Master Programme at The Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (CIHEAM-IAMB).

The seminar covered two topics: FAO's Locust Control Strategy and the FAO-Global Monitoring and Early Warning Systems of Transboundary Plant Pests. Ten postgraduate students from ten different countries (Albania, Algeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia, and Turkey) actively participated in both sessions.

The seminar was a great opportunity for the students to learn more about FAO's work on the management of transboundary plant pests. On the day before the seminar, a special session was held to discuss the Aral Sea Catastrophe and whether this global environmental disaster could be reversed. This session was open to all staff and students at CIHEAM-IAMB.
