Ankara, Turkey - Within the scope of its “Strengthening Production and Utilization of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs)” project, FAO in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Isparta Young Businessmen Association (IGIAD) has provided good manufacturing practices (GMP) training to the cosmetics sector in Isparta, Turkey.

The training sessions were conducted on 13-16 January 2020, and included quality assurance, good manufacturing practices for GMP pharmaceutical products, quality control, self-inspection, sanitation, hygiene and international standards. The participating company owners had the opportunity to pay field visits to the production lines of GMP-certified cosmetics manufacturers. Additionally, the provided training materials will serve as a guide for the sector. The trainings activities were coordinated by the Isparta Young Businessmen Association (IGIAD) for 17 medium-sized enterprises in the sector.

The project aims to strengthen the competitiveness of the cosmetics sector in international markets and to improve the quality of life and economic well-being of producers in rural areas – particularly women producers – by supporting sustainable production and marketing practices.

Project activities will continue in 2020 to strengthen capacities, focusing on the training of farmers and processors as well as supporting two women farmer cooperatives in the districts of Kuyucak and Güneykent.
