Carp farming webinar brings experts and entrepreneurs together

9 December 2020; Ankara- A two-day webinar on carp farming was organized within the scope of the project “Capacity Building for Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Management in Central Asia (FISHCap)”, a project that was developed under FAO-Turkey Partnership Program on Food and Agriculture (FTPP II). Considering that cultured carp production, together with barbels and cyprinids, corresponded to a quarter of global aquaculture production volume and generated a value of USD 62 billion in 2018, the webinar provided a valuable platform to explore opportunities that to expand carp aquaculture in the Central Asian and Europe regions. 

The webinar was attended by over 100 participants from 8 countries, including academicians, researchers,  ministerial staff, fish farmers, representatives of fish farmers associations and investors. The Virtual Regional workshop is organized by the FAOSEC Office, in cooperation with the Freshwater Fisheries Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences;  Network of Aquaculture Centers in Central and Eastern Europe, (NACEE); a Romanian Fish Farmers Association, the Research Institute for Fisheries and Aquaculture (HAKI), based in Szarvas, Hungary; Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The event started with the opening speech by Sumiter Broca, FAO Senior Policy Officer. Addressing participants from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and Mongolia, Broca stated that carp is not only a significant nutrition source, but it is also marketed with affordable prices with a high reproductive capacity. He added that carp farming should be taken as an opportunity to increase employment, especially for women and youth, in fisheries and aquaculture sector.

After Broca, Mustafa Altuğ Atalay, Director General of Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry delivered his speech. Atalay stated that Turkey has been subsidizing carp farming with a view to increase its production, expansion of its breeding, and increase its domestic and foreign consumption since 2019.

During the meeting, experts shared extensive knowledge and information as well as experiences on various aspects of carp farming such as sustainable/responsible carp farming and management and carp nutrition and feeding. Moreover, participants had the opportunity to learn about the carp farming practices in China and Hungary thanks to the case-study sessions during the webinar. Haydar Fersoy, FAO Senior Fishery and Aquaculture Officer, who also moderated the discussions, said that throughout the webinar, knowledge on modern and innovative technologies in carp farming as well as the principles and techniques of carp farming in Eurasia were shared with the participants.

A brief report on the webinar will be shared with the participants in the coming days.

 

About the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programme

The objectives of the FAO-Turkey Partnership Programmes are to provide support to ensure food security, rural poverty reduction and sustainable forest management, combat desertification and preserve ecosystems in Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan and other countries of mutual interest.

Established in 2007, the first phase of the FAO Turkey Partnership Programme on Food and Agriculture (FTPP) has benefited from trust fund contributions totaling USD 10 million, financed by the Government of Turkey and represented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. During the first phase of the programme, 28 projects were implemented in 16 countries between 2009-2015.

In 2014, Turkey and FAO commenced the second phase of the FTPP along with the first phase of the FAO-Turkey Forestry Partnership Programme (FTFP) with an additional fund of USD 20 million, bringing Turkey’s total contribution to USD 30 million.
