Bishkek – The United Nations General Assembly has declared 2022 the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022). FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system.

As part of the IYAFA 2022 campaign, the Ministry of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) organized an awareness-raising event in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan on 4 October 2022, to promote fish consumption and increase the visibility of the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture.

The main objective of the lunch event was to raise awareness among the Kyrgyz public about the development of the fisheries sector and the benefits of consuming fish products. As part of the event, Dzhanybekov Askarbek Saparbekovich, Minister of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, and Rakhmanova Dinara Kurmanbekovna, Deputy FAO Representative in Kyrgyzstan, jointly prepared a dish of Steamed Toktogul Trout with Seasonal Vegetables with renowned chef and silver medallist of the World Culinary Championship Emil Dzhangirov.

The event provided an opportunity to demonstrate the significant potential of the Central Asian region to contribute to the sustainable development of fisheries and aquaculture. In addition to discussing current developments in the aquaculture and fisheries sector of Kyrgyzstan, participants also had a chance to debate the outcomes of the FISHCap project, which is being implemented under the FAO-Türkiye Partnership Programmes. The project aims to increase regional capacities to effectively address the sustainable exploitation, management, protection and development of freshwater resources for sustainable fish production in support of food safety.
