Izmir hosts timely event on smart technologies in the agriculture and food industry

Izmir, Türkiye – Digital agriculture and climate-smart agricultural practices are attracting increasing attention in the Turkish agricultural and food sectors. To discuss their implications and applications, İzmir Provincial Directorate of the Ministry of Industry and Technology organized SANTEK İzmir 2023 in conjunction with the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, Ege University, the Izmir High Technology Institute, the Aegean Region Chamber of Industry, the Izmir Commodity Exchange and the Aegean Exporters’ Associations. The event took place on 19 October 2023 at the IzQ Innovation Centre and focused on the themes of “Digital Agriculture” and the “Food Industry and Smart Technologies in Agriculture”.

Throughout the day, expert panellists from academia, government and the private sector shared their views on digital agriculture and smart technologies in the agriculture and food sectors. The event also included presentations for participants on digital monitoring technologies in agriculture, possible applications of drone technology and artificial intelligence, and machine learning in agriculture.

In her contribution to the panel “Examples of Good Practices in Smart Agriculture”, Ayşegül Selışık, Assistant Representative of FAO-Türkiye, emphasized the importance of embracing digital agriculture and smart farming in agriculture to address challenges presented by an increasing population and decreasing natural resources. Selışık also shared FAO’s approach to digital agriculture and affirmed that the Organization supports all stakeholders – and governments in particular – in bridging digital divides at different levels, to enable everyone to benefit from the emerging digital society and smart farming applications. Selışık ended by sharing some of FAO’s activities in the field of digital agriculture such as the Global Livestock Environmental Assessment Model and the Modelling System for Agricultural Impacts of Climate Change.
