INFORMATION NOTE ON ARRANGEMENTS



I. Location of the Sessions

1. By kind invitation of the Government of the Republic of South Africa, the Sixth Session of the Sub-Group on Hides and Skins and the Seventeenth Session of the Intergovernmental Group on Meat will be held in Cape Town from 9 to 14 November 1998. The sessions will be held at:

III. Entry formalities

4. Delegates and observers who require an entry visa for the Republic of South Africa must obtain these from the South African Consulate or Diplomatic Mission in their country before their departure for Cape Town. Should any difficulty arise, the Liaison Officers should be informed immediately. Furthermore, participants and accompanying travellers should have a visa for the country to which they are proceeding from South Africa, if the law of that country so requires.

IV. Hotel Accommodation

5. Delegates should make their hotel reservations through Global Conferences. Please note that special hotel prices (Appendix I) have been arranged for the meetings and, therefore, delegates should make their bookings as early as possible and no later than 30 days prior to the Sessions. A form for this purpose is provided at the back of this information note (Appendix II).

V. Transport

6. Cape Town can be reached by plane. The airport is about 20 kms from the city centre. It takes 20-25 minutes by taxi to reach the city from the airport. A shuttle service between the airport and the Hotel can be arranged by contacting the Hotel selected at a fare of around US$ 25-30.

VI. Banking Facilities

7. The national currency is the Rand. As of mid-July 1998, the exchange rate was approximately 6-7 Rand to one US dollar. Cash or travellers' cheques can be exchanged at any bank (banking hours: Monday through Friday from 8.30 to 13.00 hours).

VII. Climate

8. The month of November coincides with the beginning of the summer with temperatures of:

VIII. Registration

9. Registration will be at the meeting site, Holiday Inn Garden Court, on Monday 9 November 1998 from 8.30 to 9.45 hours for participants to the Sixth Session of the Sub-Group on Hides and Skins.

10. Registration will be at the meeting site, Holiday Inn Garden Court, on Thursday 12 November 1998 from 8.30 to 9.45 hours for participants to the Seventeenth Session of the Intergovernmental Group on Meat.

IX. Relation To "Meet in Africa" Event

11. The two meetings will be held in conjunction with "Meet in Africa", an event convened by the International Trade Centre UNCTAD/WTO which will encompass a trade fair , with representatives from the leather industry and trade, and various seminars and workshops.
