Vancouver: a food strategy at community scale

Author: FAO, EStà, City of Vancouver
Publisher: FAO
2018

Since 2003, the City of Vancouver has been working to support a just and sustainable food system based on residents’ initiatives and grassroots community development. Ten years later, the City Council adopted the Vancouver Food Strategy, an official plan that integrates a full spectrum of urban food system issues within a single policy framework, including food production, food processing, distribution, access, and food waste management. It included, amongst others, the implementation of an increased number of food assets within the communities, a facilitated access to fresh food, funding for Neighborhood Food Networks, and support to urban agriculture initiatives.
