Outh African municipalities are facing unprecedented challeges in the face of climate-related shocks and stresses, and will face more in the future. While often overlooked, investment in nature-based solutions or nature-based infrastructure can support the reduction in carbon emissions and increase the resilience of municipalities to projected climate and environmental challenges. This publication presents the results of a sustainable asset valuation of nature-based infrastructure to mitigate flooding and heat risks in the City of Tshwane, South Africa. The modelling done for this study uses a place-based approach to quanitfy the benefits of investing in nature-based infrastructure to mitigate flooding and heat risk, using as a starting point a specific local greenfield development in the Tshwane metropolitan area.
