Honduras is among the world’s poorest countries and has one of the highest rates of urban poverty in the Latin America and Caribbean region. In 2010, almost 60 percent of the country’s 4 million city dwellers had incomes below the national poverty line. The capital, Tegucigalpa, is emblematic of the country’s urban development challenges. Since 1970, the population has increased fivefold, from 220 000 to an estimated 1.2 million, and is expected to exceed 1.7 million within 10 years. Almost half of the urban area consists of informal settlements. Most of Tegucigalpa’s barrios marginales are found on very steep slopes, prone to landslides, and lack even the most basic services. They also suffer the highest crime rates. Four of those settlements were chosen in 2009 for a pioneering project to establish household gardens. The project’s impact has been farreaching – in improving food and nutrition security, strengthening communities, and helping to shape public policy on urban development.
