Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries

in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication

Capacity development activities for SSF civil society organizations on the SSF Guidelines and VGGT

01/06/2018

Three workshops took place in Tanzania, Sri Lanka and Brazil. The 3-day training workshops are based on the learning guide “Putting the Voluntary Guidelines on Tenure and the SSF Guidelines into practice: A learning guide for civil society organizations” to create learning materials that are tailored to small-scale fisheries organizations and CSOs and which can be utilized in their efforts to bridge the VGGT and SSF Guidelines. This learning material was co-developed by FAO and the IPC Fisheries Working Group. The overall goal of the training is to enable SSF organizations and their constituents to use the VGGT/SSF Guidelines meaningfully and effectively to improve the governance of tenure and ensure sustainable small-scale fisheries.

The Learning Guide uses participatory and experiential learning, based on participants’ active interaction and their direct experience.  The different modules are adapted by the local organization to their specific context. Through group sessions, participants are actively involved in the learning process and engaged in critical thinking, problem solving and decision-making in contexts that are relevant to them. The final guide will be available in early 2019.
