Developing a national plan of action for implementing the SSF Guidelines in Tanzania

13/03/2020

In Tanzania, a National Task Team is leading the way to implement the SSF Guidelines. In mid-March, the team held a consultative workshop at the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in the capital Dodoma as a step towards developing a National Plan of Action (NPOA) for the implementation.

The workshop, funded by FAO, was opened by the FAO representative Dr Oliva Mkumbo and the Ministry’s Acting Permanent Secretary, Mr Magese Bulayi. The 46 participants were then asked to engage in group work and contribute their thoughts on what considerations are essential for successfully implementing the SSF Guidelines.

This consultation is one in a row to develop an NPOA for how to implement the SSF Guidelines, including how to measure progress. A report from the workshop will be published shortly.

Tanzania has already taken steps towards implementing the SSF Guidelines. Among them are a study on women’s roles in small-scale fisheries in the country, and the launching of the Tanzanian Women Fish Workers Association (TAWFA).
