Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-Scale Fisheries

in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication

ICSF workshop on the implementation of the SSF Guidelines at local level in India

05/11/2019 - 06/11/2019

FAO supports an International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) project on social, economic and environmental transformation of inland and marine small-scale fisheries.

In early November, ICSF in collaboration with the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), hosted a national workshop of local governments – known as panchayat raj institutions – to raise awareness about the SSF Guidelines and review the capacities of panchayati raj institutions to implement the SSF Guidelines in India.

The objectives of the workshop were to:

  • Raise awareness about the SSF Guidelines and review the capacities of panchayat institutions to implement the Guidelines;
  • Review existing panchayat budgets and programmes for marine and inland fisheries and fishing communities, and identify opportunities and gaps in local governance; and
  • Highlight panchayat-level best practices on participatory decision making; delivery of welfare and social services benefiting fishing communities; women's socio-economic development and equal representation; climate change adaptation and disaster risk management; and sustainable fisheries management and resource utilization
