Launching workshop of the National Plan of Action (NPoA) - Towards Implementation of the Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication in Tanzania

The  launch of the NPoA for implementing the SSF Guidelines (NPoA-SSF) was held from 30th - 31st March at Flomi Hotel, Morogoro.

The workshop was organized by the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in collaboration with the FAO Country Office in Tanzania and the National Task Team (NTT) for the development of the NPoA-SSF, composed of representatives of the government, small-scale fisheries organizations and academia.

The NPoA-SSF is the result of a consultative process that involved small-scale fisheries organizations, the government, and research.

The workshop involved 120 participants drawn from central and local government; fisheries research institutions and academia; fishers and fishworkers’ organizations such as the Tanzania Women Fish Workers Association (TAWFA) and Beach Management Unit (BMUs); intergovernmental organizations such as the Lake Tanganyika Authority (LTA) and Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) (attended virtually); as well as international and national NGOs such as WWF, EMEDO, Mwambao, Sea sense and TNC.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries officially opened the workshop and pointed out that the implementation of the NPoA-SSF is expected to bring solutions to most of the challenges facing small-scale fisheries in the country. He urged the audience to collaborate in the implementation of the planned activities. The workshop called upon all stakeholders in their respective capacities to cooperate and play their role in implementing the NPoA-SSF; identify NPoA-SSF activities and align them with their annual work plan and budget; mobilize resources for the implementation of the NpoA-SSF; and support monitoring and evaluation of the NPOA-SSF implementation process.
