In the framework of IYAFA 2022, FAO Oman in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) and Bait Al Zubair joined forces to organize an exceptional event highlighting the role that small-scale fishers, fish farmers and fish workers play in food security and nutrition, poverty eradication and sustainable natural resource use. In order to emphasize the important role of women in the Sultanate, the event will be held during the week of International Women’s Day.

In Oman, the Government has paid great attention to the fisheries sector as it plays an important role in achieving food security. Fisheries are mainly small-scale, artisanal and have high growth potential. Women in particular, play a vital role in the sector especially in the collection, production and processing of fish and marine products and contribute to the economic growth of the sector.

Description of the event

The event will feature a virtual Ted Talk on interdisciplinary fisheries related topics (women in SSF, artisanal fisheries and culture, SSF and arts). Speakers include thought-leaders, celebrities, community voices, entrepreneurs, and SMEs from around the world and Oman.

The event will include a cultural session where stations will be that of rural women in particular coastal women demonstrating their life skills and showcasing their products. Artists will also participate in this exhibition showcasing their works related to coastal women.

One day prior to the event, the cultural session stations will be recorded to be broadcast the following day during the event for those who are attending virtually. A documentary style host will ask the selected coastal women questions on their tasks and meanings. The video will also feature artists at work and their artwork.

Another room hosts a workshop with children (9-12yo) on the role of women in artisanal fisheries in Oman including exchanges of ideas and educational stories. This session will also be broadcast online, to enable children from around the world to participate and learn.

Interpretation will be provided in three languages: Arabic, French and English to allow the engagement of a wide group of diverse stakeholders to participate in the celebration of IYAFA 2022.
