Project Objective: To ensure that the biodiversity and carbon sinks of Zambia – particularly those critical forest landscapes in selected protected areas (including core National Parks and buffer Game Management Areas) – are better protected from threats through improved management effectiveness at the institutional level; sustainable forestry management practices and integrated land use planning at the local level; and application of appropriate low-carbon, biomass-energy technologies.
Component 3. Establishment of financial incentives and dissemination of appropriate technologies for sustainable charcoal production and SFM in selected charcoal-producing Game Management Areas (GMAs, Mufunta and Namwala in Greater Kafue NP) with the following expected outcomes:
- Improved data collection and monitoring of biomass energy and charcoal production and use in GMAs
- Low-carbon charcoal production technologies have successfully replaced inefficient systems in targeted GMAs
- Sustainable charcoal recognized as a viable livelihoods activity in pilot GMAs and financial incentives proposed for scale-up post-project
- Basic carbon project design completed for voluntary carbon market project linked to improved kilns and sustainable biomass use
Expected outputs:
- Deployment of low-carbon technologies and development of sustainable charcoal schemes in pilot areas : (i) Community cooperatives formed and trained in use of new technology; (ii) Charcoal retort kiln pilots introduced - 240 (120 in two GMAs) to replace earth kilns; (iii) licenses granted for all improved kilns; and (iv) Profit margin per output unit of charcoal produced increased by at least 20% per group as compared to baseline scenario (to be determined in PPG)
- Scale-up of improved technology promoted through (i) Integrated national data system on charcoal use and production in GMAs developed; (ii) National standardized baseline developed for sustainable charcoal; (iii) Financial incentives implemented to encourage purchase of kilns by producer associations nationally
