The European Union Energy Initiative (EUEI) was established in 2002 as a joint commitment by EU member states and the European Commission to promote the role of energy in development. A Partnership Dialogue Facility (PDF) was founded in 2004 as an instrument to serve the Initiative’s four strategic service lines:

1)      European Union Energy Initiative (EUEI) Secretariat

2)      Strategic Energy Advisory and Dialogue Services (SEADS)

3)      Africa-EU Energy Partnership (AEEP)

4)      Africa-EU Renewable Energy Programme (RECP)

The European Union Energy Initiative Partnership Dialogue Facility (EUEI PDF) promotes sustainable energy for equitable development in Africa, Latin America and Asia, and contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the SDG7. The thematic pillars of EUEI PDF were renewable energy and biomass; energy efficiency; energy access; energy security, migration, climate change and energy in cities.

During its operational period of 2004-2018, a project portfolio of 136 activities were implemented in 35 countries across three continents. Currently, the Activity Database of the EUEI PDF programme covers 172 activities – 81 under SEADS, 30 under AEEP, 46 under RECP, and 14 under EUEI.
