Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) - Increasing Efficiency in Harvesting, Processing, and Use of Charcoal in Zambia

This NAMA proposed implementation of five core activities:

(i) establishment of alternate coupes and shelterbelt strips systems for sustainable forest wood harvesting for charcoal production;
(ii) establishment of charcoal retort kilns for sustainable charcoal production and associated sustainable business;
(iii) promotion of adoption of improved charcoal cook stoves for sustainable utilization of charcoal and associated sustainable business;
(iv) capacity building and awareness campaigns among the stakeholders participating in charcoal production and production; and
(v) innovative financing to provide risk capital and development of business model for charcoal producers (private and cooperatives), transporters and traders, and micro credit to enable end users to purchase the stoves.
