Many banana sector players are aware of the threat of the Tropical Race 4 strain of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (TR4) that causes Fusarium wilt in Cavendish bananas. Several other banana cultivars are also susceptible to TR4.
The 11th International Congress of Plant Pathology will be a celebration of the Congress' vision to promote an engaged world community of plant health scientists advancing knowledge for a safe, affordable, secure supply of food, feed, and fiber for a growing population. Presentations will cover the full range of research topics from genomics to epidemiology, which affect plant health at a local and global scale. ICPP2018 is organized by the American Phytopathological Society.
In its June 2018 report, the High Level Panel of Experts of the Committee on World Food Security mentions the WBF as an example of multi-stakeholder partnership to improve food security and nutrition in the framework of the 2030 Agenda.
On 21 May 2018, the Banana Occupational Health and Safety Initiative saw the official launch of the Manual in Machala, Ecuador, which was chaired by the Minister of Labour, Minister of Agriculture, and FAO representatives, amongst others. The event resulted in the symbolic act of delivery of the Manual from the ministers to banana plantation workers, as well as the presentation of a new Ministerial Agreement. This was followed by a press conference for the media.
Working Group 02 coordinators have announced that the next in-person meeting of the working group will take place in Montreal, Canada, on 10 and 11 October 2018.
