In December 2024, Morocco announced its octopus quota for 2025. Standing at 28 800 tonnes, this quota showed an increase of 23.6 percent compared to 2024 and fishing prospects are described as being optimistic for the season starting on 1 January 2025. In Mauritania, the octopus fishing season began on 1 December 2024 with initial good harvests being reported.

For various reasons, there will be less supplies of both octopus and squid in the months to come. The fisheries partnership agreement between the European Union and Morocco has been made invalid, and this will no doubt make it difficult for the EU to obtain adequate supplies from Morocco, in spite of the fact that the latter has increased its octopus quotas.

Squid fishing in South America has been good, and landings are above last year’s level. Octopus quotas have been increased by Morocco and the market outlook seems promising with the approach of the summer holidays in Europe.

Global octopus landings are down, continuing the declining trend that has been seen for several years. Moreover, as quotas have been reduced, supplies are expected to become even tighter. However, at the same time, demand has weakened, probably as a result of worldwide inflation. Prices for octopus have fallen slightly but are expected to recover. Meanwhile, global squid supplies are varied.

Octopus supplies are still low and likely to remain so through 2024, while supplies of squid are somewhat better. Octopus prices will stay high and possibly even rise further during the summer holidays.
