GLOBEFISH | Quarterly Fishmeal and fish oil analysis - February 2025
03/03/2025
In 2023, global fishmeal production fell by 23 percent, while fish oil output declined by 21 percent, largely due to poor catches of Peruvian anchoveta, the primary global source of both commodities. Poor fishing conditions persisted into early 2024, but as El Niño conditions weakened, the situation improved markedly

GLOBEFISH | Quarterly Fishmeal and fish oil analysis - December 2024
09/12/2024
In 2024, global fishmeal and fish oil supplies saw marked improvements due to strong small pelagic catches in Peru. The two annual catch quotas in Peru’s crucial north-central region were set at nearly five million tonnes, a substantial increase from the more modest 1.3 million tonnes harvested in 2023.

GLOBEFISH | Quarterly Fishmeal and Fish Oil analysis - September 2024
10/11/2024
Peru’s first 2024 fishing season in the all-important northcentre region has effectively closed, with almost the entirety of the allocated quota of 2 475 000 tonnes landed by the end of June 2024. While this has provided welcome relief for supplies of both fishmeal and fish oil, both of which were critically limited by poor catches last year, it will still take some time for the market to normalize.

The re-opening of the main anchoveta fishing grounds in Peru provided some welcome relief for critically-limited global supplies of fishmeal and fish oil. However, this has not been sufficient to alleviate shortages. Fish oil, in particular, has been limited not only by low catches but also historically-low oil yields, leading to a global shortfall of several hundreds of thousands of tonnes in 2023.

GLOBEFISH | Quarterly fishmeal and fish oil analysis - June 2024
03/06/2024
Peru’s Institute of the Sea (IMARPE) announced a quota of 2 475 000 tonnes for the first 2024 fishing season in the northcentre region. The extremely tight market that persisted throughout 2023, particularly for fish oil, is set to ease somewhat with the return of Peruvian supply, although it will take time for the market to stabilize. Demand for both fishmeal and fish oil remain firm, with fish oil continuing to exhibit extraordinarily inelastic demand, which has kept
