The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Cambodia took part in the Global Youth Dialogue on Sustainable Livestock Transformation which was held on 25-27 September 2023. The participation in youth dialogue on this global platform speaks of FAO Cambodia’s commitment to making strides towards sustainable livestock transformation and acknowledges the significant contributions which youth can make on this journey.

“My participation in the Youth Dialogue at the Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation exemplifies FAO Cambodia's dedication to engaging and supporting the aspirations of young leaders in sustainable development. The recommendations presented by the youth resonate harmoniously with ongoing FAO projects in Cambodia, underscoring the importance of inclusive, science-based and youth-driven approaches to revolutionize the livestock sector for a more sustainable future” says Todd Hunkin, International Statistician at FAO Cambodia.

The insights and recommendations shared during this international dialogue closely align with FAO initiatives in Cambodia, demonstrating a commitment to fostering sustainable agriculture for the future.

Three FAO projects in Cambodia are of particular significance to the contents of the statement and epitomize the essence of the statement provided by youth. These are, the Green Climate Fund-funded Public-Social-Private Partnerships for Ecologically-Sound Agriculture and Resilient Livelihood in Northern Tonle Sap Basin (PEARL); the European Union-funded Cambodia Programme for Sustainable and Inclusive Growth in the Fisheries Sector: Capture component; and the Antimicrobial Resistance Multi-Partner Trust Fund project, Enhancing Governance and Coordination Mechanisms to Reduce Antimicrobial Resistance in Cambodia. These projects incorporate the principles of youth involvement, modern animal raising technologies, and One Health methodologies.

The event gathered 150 young professionals, academics and producers with expertise in livestock to craft a Youth Statement, which was subsequently presented at the Global Conference on Sustainable Livestock Transformation.

The youth participants in the dialogue passionately urged global leaders and stakeholders to pay heed to their voices. They emphasized the imperative nature of incorporating youth insights into future strategies, ensuring a resilient and sustainable livestock industry that benefits both people and the planet.
