4. SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS

4.1 National Near East Fisheries Training Center at Kalaat el Moudik

A plan for the establishment of a permanent National Near East Fisheries Training Center was prepared by the expert, and accepted and implemented by the Government starting in 1961 when construction of the training building was commenced. Installation of the laboratory with aquaria, kitchen, water supply, electricity and lighting, and dormitory facilities followed. Teaching and training materials were prepared along with the lectures to be given.

During 1964 and 1965 fourteen trainees from four Arab countries were enrolled at the Center for a 9-month course in fish culture. All fourteen trainees completed the course satisfactorily and received certificates of successful attendance. (See Section 3.1).

4.2 Experimental Fish Culture Station at Kalaat el Moudik

Despite serious handicaps, especially the crucial shortage of water supply, a number of experiments aimed at increasing the yield of the ponds was carried out. Results indicate a potential harvest of 2,600 kg of carp of marketable size per ha per year when fertilization and feeding are carried out. (See Section 3.2).

4.3 Ain Taka Pilot Fish Culture Station

The original plan to establish a 150-ha commercial fish farm was revised due to land ownership problems. A plan for a 42-ha farm was completed, tenders let and work commenced. The objectives of the farm are to put into commercial practice the results obtained at the Experimental Fish Culture Station. Suggestions for operating the farm are given. (See Section 3.214) and 3.215).

4.4 Trout Culture

An experimental stocking of waters of the Arne district with rainbow trout produced encouraging success. (See Section 3.3).

4.5 Training of Fishery Workers

In addition to the Training Center program, all counterpart assistants of the expert were trained in different aspects of fish culture, fishery management, administration and related subjects.

4.6 Assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture on Fishery Problems

In addition to the day-to-day assistance given the Fisheries Section of the Ministry, the expert rendered what services he could as requested by the Ministry on various fishery matters not covered by his terms of reference.
