5. SUMMARY OF RECOMMENDATIONS

5.1 National Near East Fisheries Training Center at Kalaat el Moudik

An effective and continuing fisheries program depends upon adequately trained fisheries technicians. At present the need in Syria is for medium-level trained personnel. It is therefore strongly recommended that the training program at the National Center be continued. The number of trainees should be established in accordance with the expansion program and in line with the policy adopted by the Government.

It is further recommended that the administrative staff at the Center be drastically reduced in order to reduce costs per trainee to a justified financial output.

5.2 Experimental Fish Culture Station, Kalaat el Moudik

It is recommended that immediate attention be given to the water supply. This is basic to all future plans.

It is further recommended that proper and complete pond records be kept since without such records no reliable results can be expected.

It is also recommended that emphasis should be placed on developing a new stock of carp breeders, which is also vital for the future development of fish culture in Syria.

5.3 Ain Taka Pilot Fish Culture Station

It is recommended that this station should be devoted to its original aim, i.e., to produce fish for the market.

It is also recommended that urgent attention be given to the problem of pond drainage. The establishment of a gate at Main Drain B and 2.7.2 drain should be done pending deepening of Drain B in order to permit draining of the ponds in the winter-spring high water period.

It is further recommended that the Station buildings should be completed.

Finally it is recommended that the rearing program be based on a one-year basis as was demonstrated at the Experimental Fish Culture Station.

5.4 Trout Culture

It is recommended that the experimental stock of rainbow trout in the Arne River be continually checked and catches recorded and that stocking be carried out as planned.

It is also recommended that expansion of trout stocking activities be postponed on other waters until a sufficient number of trout fingerlings can be raised at the proposed hatchery.

It is further recommended that the proposed trout hatchery be built as planned.
