APPENDIX 2
PROJECT IDEA FOR EXTERNAL ASSISTANCE

Title: Development of Artisanal Fishing and Aquaculture in the Southern Coast of Trian Jaya

Explanatory Note:

The southern coast of Irian Jaya is rich with fishery resources which is at present not fully exploited. Initial capture operations using traditional methods indicate that the production can be increased even with modest mechanizaand slight improvement of gear. The production can further be enhanced if the necessary storage and processing facilities are made available and marketing outlets arranged. It is also noted that this coastal zone has very extensive swamplands estimated to be about 500 000 ha, a portion of which can be suitable site for the development of aquaculture.

The purpose of this project is to provide the necessary advisory services for the improvement of fishing in the coastal inshore areas, determine the essential facilities for storage and processing, initiate their acquisition and promote the development of coastal aquaculture in suitable sites for the raising of finfish and shrimps.
