DETAILS OF THE PLANNED RESEARCH PROJECTS (Contd.)

OBJECTIVIES:

1. determination of the effects of enforcement of the Tank Enforcement Act on the use of derelict/non-used ponds;

1. development of technologies for pen and cage culture of different species of fish in small water bodies;

2. to undertake regular sampling (using experimental gill nets) to collect basic data for population dynamics;

5. to investigate racial differences of various stocks.

1. to determine seasonal variation in CPUE of major carps for different year types;

1. application of existing artificial reproduction systems of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii under local circumstances, and selection of the best system for Bangladesh;
2. adaptation of larval rearing and grow out technologies and inputs, and development of new technologies suited for local circumstances;
3. determination of the economics of artificial reproduction, larval rearing, and grow out technologies for Macrobrachium.

1. development of optimum large-and small-scale production systems, including hatcheries, for Macrobrachium;
2. studies into improvement of farm designs and lay-outs.

1. preparation of suggestions for technical improvement of the hatchery at Chandpur; implementation thereof;

6. determination of the economics of improved hatchery production.

OBJECTIVES:

1. development of an economically viable paddy-cum-shrimp farming system appropriate to the prevailing socio-economic conditions in Bangladesh. The farming system should be suited to be practiced by the small and marginal farmers as a homestead enterprise, or by entrepreneurs as a commercial venture;
2. demonstration/extension of the farming system developed.

OBJECTIVES:

1. determination of optimum stocking density and ratio in a polyculture of silver carp, rohu, mrigal, and magur, integrated with paddy farming;
2. determination of optimum fertilization and feeding rates for maximum growth and yield;
3. development of an economically viable paddy-cum-fish farming system appropriate to the prevailing socio-economic conditions in Bangladesh, which could be practiced by the small and marginal farmers as a homestead enterprise, and/or by entrepreneurs as a commercial venture;
4. demonstration/extension of the developed farming system.

OBJECTIVES:

1. to survey, collect and evaluate the kinds of pesticides and their doses practically used by the local farmers;
2. to determine the toxicity and the approximate “safe” doses of pesticides and fungicides that could be used in paddy-cum-fish/shrimp integrated farming;
3. to prepare farm budgets for paddy culture with/without pesticides and/or fish and shrimp;
4. to provide suggestions or guidelines regarding different kinds of pesticides and fungicides and their standard doses to be used by farmers;
5. extension and demonstration of results of integrated paddy-cum-fish/shrimp farming with safe use of pesticides.

OBJECTIVES:

1. detailed limnological, meteorological, hydrological and physico-chemical studies of Lake Kaptai to estimat the production potential;
2. studies on the dynamics of the fish stock in Lake Kaptai (reproduction and recruitment, artificial stocking, etc.);
3. studies on the efficiency of gear, mesh size, fishing effort, and catch per unit effort;
4. socio-economic studies of Lake Kaptai fisheries;
5. assessment of the maximum sustainable yield (MSY), based on the above-mentioned studies;
6. development of management measures for optimizing the production of the reservoir.

1. improvement of the fisheries output from the open floodplain by stocking them with hatchery-produced seed;
2. determination of efficient in situ nursing methodologies to enhance growth after flooding;
3. evaluation of effects of artificial stocking of floodplains;
4. determination of the financial and social consequences.

4. study of the impact of different salinities on the growth and production of shrimp;
5. determination of quality and quantity of feed needed for optimum growth;
6. field demonstration of the systems developed.

1. development of pond production management practices for the culture of P. semisulcatus, P. indicus, P. merguiensis and M. monoceros, including disemination of optimum stocking;
2. determination of the economics of culture of the species mentioned;

1. determation of optimum stocking density of M. rosenbergii in monoculture and densities of M. rosenbergii and finfishes in polyculture;
2. determination of quality and quantity of fertilizers/manures needed for optimum growth;

OBJECTIVES:

1. development of methodologies for culture of live food organisms (phytoplankton and zooplankton) in shrimp hatcheries for feeding different larval stages during hatchery rearing.

OBJECTIVES:

1. development of techniques for culture of Artemia in salt pans for production of cysts and/or biomass, which would be used in shrimp hatcheries, thus replacing imports and saving foreign exchange;
2. popularize Artemia culture among salt producers, which could give additional income to them.

OBJECTIVES:

1. testing of different formulations of feeds (with different protein levels, amino acids, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals etc. from indigenous raw materials), for their efficacy in increasing growth and production, both under laboratory and field conditions for both Macrobrachium and P. monodon (formulation of the feeds itself will take place at FARS, under project D-03);
2. based on the test results, selection of the feed that has given best results, for commercial production.

OBJECTIVES:

1. identification and evaluation of new opportunities for brackishwater culture, including various species of finfishes, crayfish and crabs;
2. studies into the feasibility of production of the identified species in Bangladesh;
3. implementation of feasible production systems in a pilot scale.
