FAO/GIEWS: Africa Report No.3 - December 2003 p.30
The joint FAO/CILSS Crop Assessment Mission, which visited the country in late October, provisionally estimated cereal production this year at a record 208 000 tonnes, an increase of 43 percent compared to last year’s poor crop and above the average of 157 000 tonnes harvested in the previous five years. In spite of this good crop, cereal import requirements for marketing year 2003/04 (November/October) are estimated at some 142 000 tonnes, reflecting consumers’ preference for imported rice.
