7. TRENDS IN LANDINGS

7.1 M. merluccius
7.2 Merluccius spp.

7.1 M. merluccius

Landings of M. merluccius, most of which come from divisions 34.1.1, 34.1.2 and 34.1.3 are shown for the period 1960-1976 in Table 1 and Figure 3. In the early 1960’s, landings were about 2000 tons, but increased irregularly to 7739 tons in 1976. Landings in excess of 10000 tons were obtained in 1970, 1974 and 1975.

7.2 Merluccius spp.

Landings of Merluccius spp. (mainly Merluccius senegalensis) are shown in Table 2 and Figure 5 for the period 1964-1976. Landings have increases considerably during this period, i.e. 6814 tons in 1964 and 88972 tons in 1976. Landings in excess of 100000 tons were recorded for the years 1973 and 1974.

It was noted that for Merluccius spp. the apparent increase in landings was due to improved reporting. Reported Spanish landings for the years before 1970 are considered unreliable.
