9. FISHING EFFORT

9.1 M. merluccius
9.2 Merluccius spp.

Estimates of the total fishing effort have been made in units of various national fleets, i.e. an estimate of total effort in units of fleet “x” provides an estimate of the number of units of fleet “x” needed to account for the total landings by all vessels.

9.1 M. merluccius

Estimates of total effort in units of Moroccan trawlers and the Spanish BAKAS are shown in Table 1 and Figure 3 for the period 1970-1976.

The agreement between the various indices is not particularly good. Total effort in units of Moroccan trawlers appears to have increased, whereas total effort in units of Spanish BAKAS shows few obvious trends.

Total effort in units of Spanish BAKAS and Moroccan vessels combined increased from 1970 to 1976.

9.2 Merluccius spp.

Estimates of total effort for the period 1964-1976 are given in Table 2 and Figure 5 in units of hours fishing by Portuguese trawlers. From 1964 until about 1969, total effort showed a tendency to increase slowly. From 1970-1973, there was a rapid increase, partly due to the improvement in the reporting of Spanish catch data and partly due to an increase in catch by USSR vessels.
