APPENDIX 2

Stocking Density of fish in cages based on oxygen availability

The supply of oxygen to the fish cage can be calculated if the velocity of the current through the cage, the transmission factor and the oxygen concentration of the water is known. In the equation the worst possible conditions are used (i.e. lowest oxygen values, high temperatures, small fish oxygen requirements following a meal).

The equation is as follows;

Where:

MCC=Maximum carrying capacity of the cage (stocking density)
MCS=Mean current speed outside the net cage (m/s)
D.O.=Mean dissolved oxygen outside the netcage (mg/1)
T.F.=Mean transmission factor (%/100)
SA=Surface area of the net facing the current
OC=Oxygen consumption of fish (mg O2/kg fish/hour)
