APPENDIX 3

Calculation of fish stocking densities for extensive cage culture for fish such as tilapia. (Beveridge 1984)

This model assumes that the growth rate of extensively cultured fish is limited by food supply. The current through the cage should be known as well as the filtering capacity of the fish before the maximum stocking density (SDMAX) can be calculated.

Then:

where :

SDMAX=fish / m3
V1=velocity of water inside the cage (m/s)
F=filtering ability of fish (l/s)
L=length of cage parallel to the prevailing current

The value for F can be obtained from published data on buccal cavity size, and gill opercular beating rates (see Hoar and Randall, 1976).
