This document has been prepared by Dr. Uwe Tietze and Mr. Jöel Prado, Fishery Industry Officers of the Fishing Technology Service, FAO Rome, and by Mr. Jean-Michel Lery, Consultant. It summarizes the findings of an interregional study on the economic viability and sustainability of marine capture fisheries carried out between 1995 and 1997 and gives an account of the proceedings and recommendations of an interregional workshop held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 15 to 18 December 1997 and hosted by the Fisheries Development Authority of Malaysia.
