BACKGROUND
No plantation programme currently exists for the establishment of high quality timber in Dominica. Such a programme is necessary to save foreign exchange, to contribute to making the country self-sufficient in timber supplies, to develop the forest industries sector and to provide employment in the rural areas. These plantations will also have important environmental benefits in particularly reducing soil erosion, improving conditions for agricultural development and improving water supplies.
IMMEDIATE OBJECTIVES
(a) Saving in foreign exchange
(b) Contribution towards making the country self-sufficient in its timber supplies
(c) Development of forest industries
(d) Protection of the environment
(e) Provision of employment
ACTIVITIES
(a) Produce 85,000 seedlings per year
(b) Plant 75 ha of Swietenia macrophylla, Cedrela odorata, Tabebuia pallida per year
(c) Tend and supply plants
(d) Prepare for Phase II (Year 6-10)
OUTPUTS
(a) Production of 340,000 seedlings for planting programme
(b) Establishment of 300 ha of plantations
(c) Preparation of Phase II action plan
(d) Construction of 8 km of roads
