Project number: 4.03

PRIORITY AREA

Conservation of Tropical Forest Ecosystems

PROJECT TITLE

Development of an Environmental Information base for Dominica

DURATION

Five (5) years

LOCATION

Dominica Conservation Association (DCA) Head Office

BENEFICIARIES

Conservation Association, Forestry Division, Tourism Division Springfield Research Centre and other NGOs and the general public

BACKGROUND

Dominica possesses a rich diversity of tropical ecosystems. Due to a lack of funds, very little has been done to record what is available in these areas. Recently it has become apparent that decisions have been taken which affect the environment without knowing the extent of the damage done because of lack of knowledge. Work done in areas such as the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and Cabrits National Park are clear indicators that ecological considerations are not taken into account. Therefore, the environment is paying the price of development due to ignorance in ecological matters.

The DCA and other environmental groups are well intentioned in the call for preserving and conserving important landmarks in Dominica. These associations are not able to describe the current status on any of these areas, nor give an accurate picture of what exists or existed in these areas. This project seeks to make environmental information on Dominica more readily available.
