About half the population of the Syrian Arabic Republic depends primarily on agriculture for its livelihood and agricultural exports are a major source of foreign currency for the country. Since the 1980s, agricultural production in the Syrian Arabic Republic has no longer been sufficient to meet domestic demand, which is rising as a result of population growth, generally rising incomes and urbanization. Increased fertilizer use is expected as a result of the expansion of the irrigated areas, the development of fertilizer use on fodder crops and increased use on fruit crops.
