3. ENGINEERING ISSUES

Sites in the region are generally isolated, in relatively rough high-profile ground and with erosive water regimes. Most of the areas surveyed were very small in terms of potential production scale, typically capable of supporting no more than 1–5 t of production, with one or two sites capable of slightly larger output, particularly if water could be reused.

A range of key issues were identified, and as local skills were well developed in coping with the exigences of terrain and water supply management, it was proposed to develop a simple series of design briefs to provide the project with reference material which they could adapt and apply according to specific site requirements. Details of these were discussed and agreed with the project NPD, and a subject list provided in the appendix. As mentioned earlier, it was not possible to develop these as further funds were not available in the following year of the project.
